Cardano founder Charles Hoskinson has released a free book aimed at explaining zero-knowledge systems to a wider cryptocurrency audience, framing it as an educational project and a stage for Midnight, Cardano’s privacy-focused network. The linked GitHub repository shows that the work is published under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 license, while the latest public release is now titled Proving Nothing: A Layered Guide to Zero-Knowledge Proof Systems.
Cardano founder releases free 337-page ZK book
In a live stream on March 27, Hoskinson said the project arose from what he described as a “shockingly low level of understanding” about zero-knowledge proofs and ZK cryptography. “So I wrote a 337-page book over the last few months,” he said. Described as a non-technical guide, although it still contains a significant amount of technical material, it is built around a seven-layer framework for understanding how ZK systems are designed from setup and languages through to proof systems, cryptography and verification environment.

This structure is essential on the field. The Cardano founder said the framework aims to help readers “understand all of ZK’s systems from that lens,” then move on to adjacent privacy-enhancing technologies, and eventually Midnight itself. The repository’s README file makes the same case in more formal language, describing the book as a guide to “the entire zero-knowledge stack from A to Z” and arguing that ZK systems don’t so much remove trust as break it down into smaller, testable parts.
Midnight Angle is not accidental. Hoskinson explicitly introduced the book as “a good way to introduce Midnight to people”, and said that one chapter was dedicated to the network, even if the broader work was designed as a general introduction to Zero Knowledge.
He also said the book goes beyond the seven-layer model to private smart contracts, the ZEXE model associated with Aleo, Midnight’s Kachina system, zkVMs, STARK-to-SNARK pipelines, and the broader market landscape for privacy and proof systems.
This scope has actually expanded since the release that Hoskinson described in the video. The GitHub release notes for version 1.10, posted on March 30, show that the book has been renamed from The Seven-Layer Magic Trick to Proving Nothing, and is now shipping in EPUB and PDF formats. The file inventory in this edition lists a 357-page dark mode PDF, while the chapter notes showcase edits and additions across 14 chapters, including sections on zkVMs, market structure, eIDAS 2.0, clusters, and a more detailed Midnight case study.

Hoskinson also explained that this is not a static post. “This is the first edition, version 1.01,” he said in the live broadcast. “I will continue to add and change and work on it throughout the weekends as more things come out and as more things are released at midnight I will add to this.” This is important because the book seems designed less as a one-off statement than as a living educational document linked to the midnight rollout and the broader commercialization of privacy technology.
At press time, Cardano was trading at $0.2468.
