A £5 million ($6.7 million) gift from cryptocurrency billionaire Christopher Harborne has landed UK reform leader Nigel Farage before the parliamentary standards watchdog over an alleged disclosure failure.
Donation size
According to reports, the money came from Harbourne, a British cryptocurrency investor based in Thailand, who gave £9 million to the UK Reform Foundation in a single donation last year – the largest gift to a UK political party by a living person in British history.
His total reform contributions reached £12 million in 2025. A separate payment of £5 million went directly to Farage in early 2024, months before Farage won a seat in Parliament.

Farage says the money was given to cover his personal security costs, describing it as an unconditional private gift without any political conditions.
His office confirmed it was in contact with the Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards, and said they expected the investigation to clear him. A spokesman for Al-Islah said: “No rules were violated.”
It is right that Nigel Farage is being investigated for receiving a £5 million gift from the crypto billionaire.
So far, Farage and Reform have not provided any satisfactory answers regarding this questionable donation. https://t.co/au9VBUNOuh

What the rules actually say
Commons rules require newly elected MPs to register financial interests and any benefits they received in the 12 months before their election. Farage was elected in July 2024. The gift was made in early 2024, putting him directly within that window.
The rules allow exemptions for purely personal gifts, but also stipulate that the donor’s potential motive must be weighed against the intended use of the money. If in doubt, registration is expected.

This is not the first time Farage has faced disclosure issues. Earlier this year, it emerged he had registered £384,000 in late interest. Standards Commissioner Daniel Greenberg ruled the breach was accidental and allowed Farage to update his records without facing formal punishment.
Opposition parties are retreating
Both Labor and the Conservatives have called for answers. Labor Party leader Anna Turley said Farage had been dodging questions since the gift first came to light, and described the investigation as appropriate.
The Conservatives, who filed the complaint that led to the investigation, also raised the matter separately with the Electoral Commission, which said it was reviewing the information.
A Conservative Party spokesman put it bluntly: £5 million is more than most people will earn in a lifetime, and Farage owes the public an explanation of how and why he earned that money.
If the commissioner finds that Farage has breached the code of conduct, potential consequences range from a formal apology to suspension from Parliament. Expulsion remains an option in the most serious cases.
